Summer Travel Essentials
My sweet fam is headed on our first Summer road trip !
Matt turned the big 50 today, and we are checking something off of his bucket list by hiking Mt. Leconte in the Smoky Mountains! This has long been a goal of his, and it’s so wonderful to be able to do it as a family!
Since I’m a solid week and a half into my Melt Your Middle meal plan, I took some extra steps to make sure that I was sticking to my goals but also allowing some wiggle room for treats as we travel! There are some very specific things I ALWAYS take on road trips to stay focused on my health and feeling good so that I can enjoy this beautiful life I get to live!
What’s In My Cooler and Food Bag:
- Chomp Sticks
- Joseph’s Pitas
- Delli Turkey
- Chopped veggies (cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, celery)
- Boiled eggs
- Almond butter
- Mixed nuts
- Beach Bars
Travel Essentials I never leave home without!
(I included links if you want to try any of them!)
- LMNT – LMNT is a tasty electrolyte drink mix formulated to help anyone with their electrolyte needs and perfectly suited to folks following a keto, low-carb, or paleo diet. I love that this is such a clean electrolyte and super tasty! Try it for yourself here!
- Shakeology – I’ll be 100% honest here.. I forgot my Shakeo this trip, and I’m super sad about it! Shakeology is a nutrient dense meal replacement shake that has everything I need for a daily does of vitamins and gut friendly supplements. It also helps keep me SUPER regular on vacation… if you know what I mean ;)!
- Energize – a pre workout that doubles as a clean, plant based afternoon pick up if I need it! (Lemon is my favorite)
- Beachbars – these are a kid-friendly snack that makes mama happy too! I can read all the ingredients, and they’re a sweet treat on the go! My boys love the Mint Chocolate the best!
Travel Tips I Always Stick To
It’s always easy to fall victim to the mentality of “I’m on vacation, so I’m just gonna eat ANYTHING I want!” Which you’re more than free to adhere to, but I know we always regret that when the bloat and headache and lethargy sets in! So, here is the mindset I stick to when I travel and teach my clients as well:
- Veggies most! There are always veggie options at restaurants these days. Fill up on a salad first, or add spinach to your omelet! Getting these nutrient dense and fiber rich foods in will keep you satiated and not likely to overstuff yourself.
- Protein at every meal! Protein fills you up and fuels those muscles, mama! Opt for high protein foods at each meal like chicken, fish and lean red meat.
- One treat a day! Yep! If I want it, I’m gonna have it! But I never want to overdo it! I plan for and allow myself one treat a day like an ice cream cone or greasy fries or wine at dinner. I enjoy it and get back to the principles above.
- Drink more water than normal. You’re gonna be THIRSTY with all that movement and eating different foods. DRINK UP! Have 8 oz before each meal and as soon as you wake up, and then drink some more! You can’t overdo it on water!
I hope this helps, and that you are planning some EPIC trips with you family this Summer. God has me so focused on not missing moments with these guys while I have them, so I encourage you in the same! UNPLUG, and make memories this Summer!
